Social Sciences

The Social Sciences learning area provides students with knowledge of societies and how people interact with each other and their environments.

We explore case studies and assess possible scenarios set in the past, the present and the future. You will continue to build on your knowledge of the differences and similarities in human experiences across time and place you began developing in Years 1-8. You will also continue to build understanding to support informed participation as a critical citizen in our communities and consider multiple perspectives.

You will develop your ability to use tools and conventions for gathering and analysing evidence and extend your experience to communicate findings. We aim to encourage curiosity about the past and our own world, broadening your understanding by exploring people, places, and ways of life beyond your own experiences.

The Social Sciences equips you with historical, geographical, economic, political, and financial knowledge of New Zealand and the world. You will learn about New Zealand’s diverse communities, including Māori history and contemporary Māori communities. You will also learn how democracy operates in New Zealand and the practices of civic participation and engagement.

This learning area prepares you with the knowledge and practices needed to access related curriculum subjects for Years 11–13, such as History, Geography, Economics, and Pacific Studies.
