Senior Prizegiving (whakatau)

This year at Senior Prizegiving we did something a little different and did a waerea/maioha to whakatau everyone into the school gymnasium. We also performed a couple of our Kapa Haka items to truly set the tone for the evening.

A waerea is a protective incantation – used as an ope approaches the marae of another kinship group. It is a challenge that attempts to determine the intent of the manuwhiri (visitors), which, once established, clears the way for the rest of the welcome ceremony.

A Maioha is ‘The Greeting’ or ‘to greet affectionately’ and is derived from traditional times where Māori celebrated the birth of a child into the world. In our case, welcoming everyone into the Logan Park realm to have a wonderful time together.

Thank you to Oscar and Sophie for opening and closing the prizegiving with a karakia. Our school haka is an item we look forward to seeing the whole school perform in the near future. Congratulations to all the students who received awards!
