I am proud of the way I have begun to build confidence in myself, particularly over my time at high school. There are things I have achieved now which a few years ago, I never would’ve believed I’d be brave enough to do.

Performing with the choir or jazz band, or some of the intimidating responsibilities that come with being a head prefect.

I think every decision I have made to do something which challenges me in a scary way, is something I am proud of.

How would your friends describe you in three words?

According to them: Driven, Warm, Courageous.

What are your favourite hobbies and activities outside of school?

My two favourite out of school activities are sports, and drums. My favourite sport is definitely basketball, however I also really enjoy football, netball, waterpolo, and taekwondo.

Sport is super important to me, as I feel like I really benefit from both the social and physical side of playing. It has helped me to make new friends, build confidence, and also really helps to satisfy my (relatively strong) competitive spirit.

I play drums in the school Jazz band, which is an opportunity I have really appreciated due to the way it has helped me gain more confidence while performing, and challenged me in a way that differs from sports and academics. Me and my friends also have a band, which if not anything else, is really fun.

Q&A with Cora

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

There are so many places in the world I would love to travel to, but if I had to pick one I’d probably choose Iceland. I think its landscape, environment, and architecture are all amazing, and I’d love to experience it all in person. I also really enjoy a lot of Icelandic music, and I think I’d really enjoy exploring and learning about Iceland’s wildlife and history.

What are your favourite subjects in school, and why do you enjoy them?

In school my favourite subject is probably history, but I also really enjoy Biology, Chemistry (sometimes), and English. I think the thing that really makes history stand out to me is the connections you begin to make between both historical events and relevant situations from the world today as you continuously learn more. I find it both really rewarding and interesting. no answer

Who is your role model, and why do you admire them?

I feel there are a number of people who I admire. I have three older sisters, and I respect them so much for the kindness, compassion, and bravery they have always shown me. I definitely aspire to be like them, and I feel so lucky to have them all in my life. I view my parents as role models, as well as my friends. I respect the way my parents live their lives, and the amount of effort they put into their jobs and our family. I respect my friends for everything they have achieved, and how considerate they are to those around them. And also because they are funny and make me laugh.

What kind of books or movies do you enjoy, and why?

I really enjoy animated movies, specifically Studio Ghibli or Pixar, as I find them really comforting. I also really like Wes Anderson, and my favourite genres are probably comedy, action, coming of age and crime.

When reading I enjoy a combination of fiction and non-fiction books. I like dystopian, realistic, and detective fiction, and like non-fiction that focuses on history, human behaviour, or a combination of both.

What are your goals for the future, and how do you plan on achieving them?

Where I want to head next after high school is still a bit cloudy for me, but I’m definitely keen on continuing my education at university. My plan at the moment is to spend the next year following as many of my interests as possible, and hopefully that will lead me to discovering something I’m really passionate about.
In the long term I’m hoping to find a job that I enjoy and can put a lot of energy into, and ideally one that helps in the improvement of people’s lives. I also really want to travel and learn more about the world, so a really big goal of mine is to take a break at some point and travel to as many different places as I can.

What makes you unique or different from your peers?

I feel like high school can be a really challenging time due to the way it can make you feel really isolated and different from those around you. However, I feel really lucky to be surrounded by people who reflect many of the things I try to be – motivated, passionate, kind, and considerate. I feel that everyone is different due to the uniqueness of their individual interests and life experiences, but at Logan I feel I am lucky as it is so easy to find any number of aspects which you are passionate about mirrored in somebody else.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be and why?

There are a very large number of issues facing the world today that I would love to change, but I feel one of the top things would be the constant spread of false information and fake and biassed news. I feel like there are a large number of issues that stem from people receiving false information, and so ideally I would want the news to be reliable as possible by showing as many perspectives to a story as they can, keeping all sides included. I feel that proper coverage of so many issues, such as global warming, poverty, most forms of discrimination and oppression, pollution, and so on, could all lead to a better understanding of these issues by the general public. Better, more reliable education through media and the news could lead to more compassion and concern in these areas by more people, and therefore more positive and impactful action would be likely to occur.
