The winter sports season, which began in Term 2 and wraps up at the end of August, has been filled with achievements and growth across various disciplines. Highlights of the season below!
Co-Ed Winter Sport Tournament
It was a fantastic achievement to place 2nd overall in the Dunedin Co-Ed Schools Winter Tournament on Thursday, 27th June! It was a nail-biting finish, just one point shy of winning the Tournament Cup. A huge congratulations to the Boys Football team for securing 1st place in their competition. Logan Park achieved impressive results, finishing 2nd in Basketball, Hockey, Badminton, and Football. Overall, Trinity Catholic College took 1st place with 34 points, Logan Park closely followed with 33 points, with Bayfield 3rd, Taieri 4th, and KVC 5th. The event celebrated both competitive spirit and participation in sports, with the sun shining to set the scene. Students represented Logan Park in Basketball, Badminton, Football, Hockey, and Netball. Coaches praised the tournament’s atmosphere, with smiles all around. A big thanks to our dedicated staff and community coaches for their time and effort, making the day possible!
The Badminton season has now ended. We had over 50 students playing badminton, with some impressive performances. The highlight of the season for both boys and girls grades was the Co-Ed Tournament taking out 2nd place after two count backs to find a winner. Congratulations to Annie Luong and Xavier Aguas who both play Otago representative badminton.
In Basketball, the Junior A boys have played outstandingly, winning all their games in A grade and showcasing their skills and teamwork. This momentum is encouraging as they prepare for the Winter Tournament in September. Junior Girls A team have developed well over the Term. A highlight for them was placing 2nd at the Co-Ed Tournament.
Senior basketball boys tournament team placed 2nd in the Co-Ed tournament. Charlie Bauchop was a standout with some powerful drives to the hoop to score valuable points in a close loss to Taieri in the final. They are all looking forward to Winter Tournament week when they attend the Southern Cup in Ashburton.
Cross Country also brought success, with Fynn Jackson securing 6th place at the Otago Secondary School Championships in May, tackling a tough 7km race with determination.
Curling and Ice Hockey.
Curling has attracted a group of keen beginners who are getting the hang of what is quite a technical sport. Ice Hockey we have three wonderful students playing for OGHS. Wyatt, Alby and Alice have been praised for their positive attitude by the Coach. The coach described them as wonderful human beings. Great job team.
Hockey
Boys’ hockey has been going well, scoring some good wins and preparing for our tournament in Oamaru. Our latest game was a good test for the team, coming back from 3-1 down at half time to secure a 3-3 draw against a strong Taieri 1st XI team.
The girls 2nd XI are in second place on the points ladder with some good wins so far this season. The girls 1st XI are focused on Winter Tournament week in Term 3. They are competitive with some very close games. Violet Middlemass and Briar Henwood were recognised by Dunedin North Intermediate for service to their school hockey teams. They were described as fabulous ambassadors.
Football
Girls football has had a good run so far, with lots of development and fresh players coming in to join the ranks. Some standout moments see Amelia Smith (Yr9) chip the Bayfield keeper to score a 1-0 winner, Māia Hamilton, Anika Biggin, and Kat Brasell-Jagger stepping up in goal, and an overall massive effort from everyone – never giving up and playing their hearts out with or without subs on the day. Congratulations to Amelia Smith who is in the Southern Federation U15 Training team.
Boys Football highlights include having two secondary school grade premier teams, Senior boys and Junior boys 1st XI both holding their own. Issac Simons and Jamie Fraser all play for Premier Mens club teams. The Boys 1st 11 has had a strong start to the season. We are sitting fourth place in the Dunedin schools premier league sitting behind the three boys schools and are looking to cause upsets. In the co-ed schools tournament the team managed to win every game without conceding a goal which is testament to our rock solid defence led by captain Jaime Fraser. We also have our share of attacking flair with the 5 star skillers Torsten Wilkinson, Harris Wilkinson and Isaac Simons a handful for any opposition.
The Junior Social boys team has developed and are really enjoying their football.
Netball has flourished under the guidance of Syreeta Norris, with notable development across the teams. The Junior girls’ A team is set to compete in the South Island Secondary Championships in July, and we wish them the best of luck. A separate article about the Otago Secondary School Championships is in this Park Press.
As the Term ends, the focus shifts to preparing for the Winter Tournaments. Teams attending are: Basketball Senior A and Junior A, Football Girls and Boys 1st XI, and Hockey Girls and Boys 1st XI will represent the school, building on a term of hard work and success.
