Logan Park students helping to eradicate pests in our local area
On the Tuesday of Week 2, a group of 6 enthusiastic students of mixed experience attended a hands-on trapping workshop with the aim of protecting our local wildlife from predators such as possums, rats and feral cats. The workshop, conducted by City Sanctuary, taught the students how to ethically and safely manage the multiple types of traps we have in the Logan Park area. The students learned how to set, monitor and take care of various traps, as well as how City Sanctuary’s efforts support native wildlife and ecosystems to flourish.
The City Sanctuary trainers also emphasized the ethics surrounding trapping, reminding students that the skills they learn are a conservation duty, not something to take pleasure in. This workshop added to the growing awareness in our school of protecting wildlife and the environment both locally and across New Zealand. The more experienced Year 13’s were exceptionally encouraging towards the less experienced Year 12’s, combined with the very patient and helpful trainers, made the experience incredibly educational and enjoyable. With active monitoring of Logan Park’s trap line now underway, these passionate students are helping ensure that our school plays a part in the conservation and protection of our beautiful environment.
