Jasmine Byfleet is currently on a practicum at Logan Park. We appreciate the energy and enthusiasm our emerging teachers bring t.o our kura.
What has stood out to you about Logan Park?
It’s hard not to notice that this school is filled with kind people. Student teachers can be a vulnerable breed in a bustling environment, but at Logan Park, students treat new staff with friendliness and respect. I have been surprised with how easy it is to get straight to teaching, students are ready to learn!
How have you found the support and guidance from staff during your practicum so far?
Oh, I fear I have hit the jackpot too soon! Whether it be the support staff hyping me up before I teach or a gentle heads up on how to complete a task, the staff at Logan Park treat me like their own. My mentors in particular freely pass on knowledge and I always feel well-prepared to tackle any class!
What have you noticed about student engagement and learning in your classroom?
Logan Park is the only school in Dunedin that offers all the niche subjects I teach. A variety of subjects are all taught for the sake and interest of the students. It then follows that the students flourish in an environment that promotes a love of learning. I get such a buzz from walking into a class full of students who are expecting to enjoy what they learn.
Based on your experience here, would Logan Park be a school you’d consider teaching at in the future? Why or why not?
Safe to say I would be one of many who would happily teach any odd subject just to get a foot in the door. I am particularly fond of the humanities department; The teachers are passionate and it is reflected by just how full the classes are. All this to say I requested to do my placement here for multiple reasons and I can now say I’d request to work here for a multitude of other reasons as well.
