Q & A With One of Our Teachers-in-Training

Callum Steele is currently on a 7-week practicum at Logan Park. He is working towards the completion of the Master of Teaching and Learning programme, at Otago University. We appreciate the energy and enthusiasm our emerging teachers bring t.o our kura.

What has stood out to you about the culture and values at Logan Park High School?

Logan Park High School fosters a culture of inclusivity, connection, and creativity, underpinned by a drive for everyone to pursue their passions. The Senior Leadership Team models an open and collaborative style of communication and engagement, which is mirrored by the staff and passed on to the students. This approach directly results in a genuine passion for learning, a desire to inquire, and a willingness to fail in the pursuit of success – all of these are evident when spending time with the students and staff. This is distinct in that the culture is not aspirational but is imbedded in the academic and cultural life of the school.

How have you found the support and guidance from staff during your practicum so far?

Throughout my practicum I have received consistent and cohesive support, which has been essential in allowing me to balance the demands of teaching with my university studies. The staff have been friendly, genuinely kind, and generous with their time and experience, making this a better experience than I could have hoped for.

What have you noticed about student engagement and learning in the classroom?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Logan Park has been the high level of both student and staff engagement in the classroom. Students come to class ready and genuinely interested in their subjects, which is supported by the dedication and passion of their teachers. A school-wide emphasis on pastoral care and wellbeing promotes this even further. Students arrive to class ready to learn, with their needs met – a key element in Logan Park’s distinct, creative, and vibrant learning environment.

Based on your experience here, would Logan Park be a school you’d consider teaching at in the future? Why or why not?

Please let me know the best place to leave my CV.

I have never been surrounded by so many passionate and creative people. It would be a privilege to work in a school like this, and I intend to apply for a job at the end of the year, if one becomes available.
