O’MAthalon

In Term Three, some of our enthusiastic mathematicians took part in an OMAthalon competition.

The Senior Competition was held on Thursday, August 14th, at Logan Park High School, with quizmaster John Major once again setting a series of challenging questions. In this pub-style quiz.

Students faced six rounds covering a wide range of topics, including general maths knowledge, problem-solving, maths history, and famous mathematicians. Questions also drew from different levels of the curriculum and even featured elements from past Junior OMAthalon competitions, adding an extra layer of difficulty. Each team could also nominate two rounds to earn double points, bringing strategy into play.

The event was hotly contested, with 25 teams from schools across the city competing for top honours. Logan Park High School entered four teams, all of which performed strongly, demonstrating excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and mathematical knowledge.

At the end of the competition, our Year 13 team, Crystal Primes, tied with Trinity College for second place. To break the tie, one representative from each school was called forward for a sudden-death quick-fire round. Geordie Stephenson stepped up for LPHS and, in front of an audience of more than 100 students, parents, and teachers, faced off against Trinity’s competitor. With tension running high, John Major read out the deciding question. After what felt like an eternity, though in reality only a few seconds, Geordie quickly deduced the correct answer, securing second place for Logan Park High School.

The Junior OMAthalon Competition was held on Thursday, 21st August, at the Edgar Centre FM Arena. This fast-paced event had a unique format where each team appointed a runner responsible for delivering answers to the marker and racing back to their team. Students were challenged to solve 30 problems in just 45 minutes, with the option of working on two questions at once.

The competition drew an impressive 34 Year 9 teams and 29 Year 10 teams, creating a lively and competitive atmosphere. The top five teams stayed neck-and-neck throughout, with the lead constantly changing as runners dashed back and forth to submit answers. Teammates waited anxiously at their desks, wondering if they had cracked the problem or would need to try again.

With only a few points separating the leaders, the contest went right down to the wire. In several cases, just one or two points made the difference in the final standings. The nail-biting finish highlighted the energy, teamwork, and problem-solving skills of all the young mathematicians involved.

We remain strong contenders in mathematics across the Dunedin region and are thrilled with the energy and enthusiasm our students brought to these events. They represented the school with pride, and we are extremely proud of their efforts. A big thank you also goes to the parents for supporting their students, and to the teachers for their organisation and dedication in running the event.
