In the recent month of December I had the incredible opportunity to complete a dive course with Dive Otago, all thanks to a scholarship I was awarded.
What started as an exciting adventure quickly became one of the best experiences of my life. Through the Whare Ahu Moana course you learn 4 different qualifications including an EMFR certification (Emergency Medical First Responder), and after the course is complete you secure rescue diver qualifications.
Being able to experience the underwater world first hand with marine life, shipwrecks and even bioluminescence gave me a whole new appreciation for the ocean. This whole experience made me so much more confident in the water and has now opened so many opportunities for me. The Dive Otago team is absolutely amazing and I was able to make some very strong friendships and connections over the 3 weeks. So if you are interested in giving this a go, have a look on the Dive Otago website for scholarship opportunities or even just to join in on a course. This could be either doing your open water ticket or the whole thing but regardless it really is such a fun and challenging experience that will bring out the best of your abilities. If anyone had any questions I’d be more than happy to answer so you can get a hold of me through my school email (neve.russell@lphs.school.nz).
