Matariki week – Mānawatia a Matariki – Matariki heri kai

In week 9 of Term 2, we celebrated Matariki week – Māori New Year.

Throughout the week, we held activities in the Whare and had Kaitahi every lunchtime.

This year’s theme of Matariki is Matariki heri kai – which supports the whakaaro (ideology) of bringing everyone together with kai. We had a range of activities such as making 8 point stars (origami), waiata Māori, koruru (knucklebones) and rākau. To top this all off, the Secondary Schools National Kapa Haka competition was being held in Nelson throughout the week and we were able to have this televised each day.

We would like to thank the Māori, Pasifika and Kapa Haka prefects for their amazing mahi in preparing such a successful week. We would also like to extend our wishes and gratitude to all the students and staff who came along to participate, have a kai and share in some kōrero about Matariki and how this is also celebrated and acknowledged other cultures here at LPHS.

We look forward to the next event to continue to bring more of our students and whānau to the Whare for a kai and a kōrero.

Mānawatia a Matariki. Hari Tau Hou Māori.
