Language Department News

The languages department have had a busy Term 2 with International Languages Week, football, trips, collaborations and Matariki.

International Languages week

This year, our International Languages Week had many events organised so that our student whanau could experience the different cultures and languages that are taught at LPHS. These ranged from Ki o Rahi (very popular) to our annual haiku competition, which saw a wonderful collection of entries.

Congratulations to our winners – Pierre, aka Zane Lehr, came first, closely followed by Samantha Guy and Tom Gillions. – Check out their and other entries on our Languages noticeboard.

We also took part in an inter school competition labeling as many items in our classroom as possible in different languages and our students rose to the challenge – we don’t yet know if we won something!

Football Fever

Football fever has certainly consumed Madame and Frau Cebulla – after all, the European Championships are held in Germany this year and “die Mannschaft’ have developed into serious contenders! Acceptable betting is taking place, as well as our own Foosball competition in the classroom. May the best team win!!

Trip to George Street Normal School

The best way to show that you have understood and mastered a skill, is to teach someone else!

A group of 12 Senior French students traveled to George Street Normal School on Friday, the 20th of June to work with Year 5/6 students.

We all had lots of fun teaching songs, reading a story and just making connections through finding out more about each other.

This is also a great way for our students to find out if teaching might be a profession they are interested in. Merci, Claire Spencer for inviting us and a bientot!

Year 9 Maori and German collaborations

Year 9 Maori and 9 German have had a few collaborations this term, giving students the chance to teach their peers what they have been learning.

The Year 9 German students were treated to a presentation of pūrārkau that the Maori students had studied and then presented to us as plays or slide shows. To say tena koutou the German students taught their classmates how to order waffles in German and then we all had a feast of Waffeln – sehr lecker!

As we are celebrating Matariki this month, we were also lucky enough to be taught a waiata that we will all record together to then send to our German partner schools in Frankfurt and Oettingen – so a three way exchange is created.
