Library Update

A lot of stuff was happening in the LPHS Library in early Term 4.

School Libraries Transform

LPHS book club has been getting behind the ‘School Libraries Transform’ campaign. ( This is a campaign which is striving to save school libraries across the country, ensuring that there is equitable access to school libraries for students right around NZ. The campaign is being run by SLANZA (School Library Association of New Zealand Aotearoa). This has arisen in response to many stories of school libraries being closed or moved into much smaller premises and funding being cut.

At LPHS we are incredibly fortunate to have a great library space which is well staffed and generously resourced to serve its students and staff. Book Club members have helped create a display to highlight this campaign and students are now interacting with the display by adding their thoughts on school libraries and signing the ‘Save our School Libraries’ petition.

LPHS school library, with the school librarians and book club, are planning a couple of events this term in support of our library community and to help promote the great work our library does in increasing literacy and building the reading culture here at school.

Summer Reading Challenge

This summer, students will have the opportunity to take home a bag of books and challenge themselves to keep reading throughout the summer break. Using the google form that has been emailed out, students can indicate how many and what types of books they would like and then they will receive a personally prepared bag with books and other goodies.

Staff Book Café

This new event was held early in December and staff were all be invited to come and issue books for their summer reading. One finding in the latest research into creating successful readers, is that having adult role models who read makes a definite and positive difference. As a library we want to serve our whole community so this event was focused on the staff. Our book club members were on hand to help with choosing books, recommending good reads and issuing material to the staff. There was also some home baking!!!
