Writers Club got off to a great start with playwright Tim Hambleton speaking to our group on Friday 19th March.
Tim began writing plays when working in a law firm in Alexandra — where the ‘secretaries knew everything’ and the lawyers nothing! Since then he has written nine full length plays and a few 10-minute plays. He mainly writes comedy but has dabbled in drama.
He offered us advice about how to get into playwriting and the many benefits. For example, he particularly enjoys watching his plays being performed by small communities where they add local references. However, he does acknowledge that watching a play can still be a nail-biting experience as the audiences have different responses from night-to-night!
We enjoyed having Tim speak to us, to listen to his clear passion and to have the rare opportunity to ask questions. He is off to Christchurch at the end of the term and we wish him all the best.
Next, Writers’ Club looked forward to the Dunedin Writers & Readers Festival in the first week of May, as well as welcoming our new junior and senior members to the group.
Everyone is welcome to drop in and out of our Monday lunch time meet-ups as it suits. You do not have to be part of the club to pop along. Warm welcomes and snacks aplenty in Room One!
