In June our class went on a trip to the Hocken Library.
Although not far from Logan Park, the Hocken proved to be invaluable with its knowledge. Even when we first arrived we stood small over a waka that had been built from scratch to a real size. We learnt all about the parts of it and found out it took 2 years to build.
Upstairs we learnt about how the Polynesians knew which way to go using their hands to jot out 11.25 degree increments.
Back downstairs we got a tour of where everything is stored. It taught us a lot about data and how we can store that for centuries learning the techniques that are no longer taught. I’m sure that there will be some people that would have wanted to head right back.
