Biology in Action: Year 12 Trip to the NZ Marine Studies Centre & Warrington Beach

In June, the Year 12 Biology students took their learning beyond the classroom with two engaging field trips along Otago’s stunning coastline.

The first visit was to the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre in Portobello, a unique facility nestled on the Otago Peninsula. Here, students had the opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of New Zealand’s coastal waters, guided by passionate and knowledgeable marine biologists. A highlight of the day was the dissection of arrow squid, a fascinating chance to study the internal anatomy of a species commonly found in our waters. Another highlight was exploring the touch tanks that were teeming with sea stars, crabs, paua and kina – even though there were complaints of cold hands!

The second trip took students to Warrington Beach, where they conducted a practical field investigation on the rocky shore. Using quadrats, identification guides, and observation notes, students worked methodically to survey the local marine life. Among the species observed were sea stars, limpets, chitons, anemones and even an octopus hiding in a rock pool.

Across both experiences, students showed curiosity, collaboration, and a strong commitment to scientific inquiry.

These trips not only supported their internal assessment work but also deepened their understanding of ecological concepts and marine biology – and may have even sparked interest in future careers in science.
