Savarna Yang: Head Prefect, Music Prefect
It’s been an exciting and busy Term Two for the music department at Logan Park! Not only have we had music assessments (oh the terror of solo performances) but also many other extracurricular and school-wide activities that have involved music students from across both the senior and junior years: Rockquest, lunchtime concerts, Dunedin Youth Orchestra, the Prom pit band, chamber music – to name a few off the top of my head. And these moments highlight just a couple of the many opportunities that playing music at Logan Park can lead to.
At Logan Park, we’re lucky enough to have an itinerant music programme where free lessons on a wide range of instruments are available to sign up for at the beginning of each year. This is a great way to try out a new instrument – whether it’s your first experience playing music or you’re already a seasoned musician. We also have a jazz band, choir, orchestra and many student-led bands and ensembles of varying genres.
Beyond the experiences that music can lead to at school, music also opens the door to an amazing community of people, and cultivates skills like creativity, collaboration and perseverance that can be used throughout life. As a music prefect, I’ve been lucky enough to experience this firsthand by being involved in both the presentation and also the organisation of so many of the aspects of music offered at Logan Park. I’m definitely biased but I would really encourage anyone who’s considered getting involved in music to take the chance and give it a go.
