A Great Day Out: Athletics Day at the Caledonian Ground

The Caledonian Ground was a great place to be this week as Logan Park High School held its annual Athletics Day. It was a classic, Dunedin day, providing the perfect backdrop for students and staff to get together and enjoy some time out of the classroom.

The day began with the traditional house chants. It was good to see so many students getting involved, many wearing their house colours or putting together creative costumes. The focus wasn’t just on who could run the fastest, jump the highest, throw the farthest, but on the sense of community and the effort put in by everyone who took part. Our talented athletes at Logan Park shone throughout the day which was on display with some highly competitive relay races.

The Results

The competition for the overall house title was incredibly close this year, coming down to just a single point. Clayton took the top spot, narrowly ahead of Aoraki.

Overall Standings:

  • 1st: Clayton (655 points)

  • 2nd: Aoraki (654 points)

  • 3rd: Toroa (576 points)

  • 4th: Omimi (440 points)

Participation was also a major highlight, with students earning points for their houses simply by having a go. Clayton led the way here too with 541 points, followed by Aoraki (523), Toroa (483), and Omimi (422).

Student Perspectives

For many, the best part of the day was the chance to try something new or meet people from different year groups. Here is what some of our students had to say:

  • Anna: “I really enjoyed leading Clayton with my friends and achieving our house win.”

  • Lucy: “My highlight was connecting with the other year groups and newer students through healthy competition and encouragement.”

  • Madeline: “What I like about Athletics day is getting out of my comfort zone and experiencing new things.”

  • Isabela: ” A chance to try new sports with my friends and find new friends.”

  • Timo “It as really fun spending the day with friends, and doing new/different sports”

  • Emerson and Ethan “There was great competitive house spirit that kept the house out competing against each other for points the whole day. It was a really fun event, good to get out in the sun and be involved with all the events.

With Thanks

A big thank you goes to the PE and Sports Departments in particular Warwick Kain. Their hard work behind the scenes made the day run smoothly and ensured that everyone, regardless of their athletic ability, felt welcome and included. Staff embraced the day and encouraged, led and took results for events. It was a successful day that truly showed the spirit of our school.
