Outdoor Experience

Logan Park is committed to providing a range of outdoor experience opportunities for international students, with two activities per term.  A sample of possible activities is outlined below:

A three day trip to Lake Tekapo  in the high country of Canterbury.  Fun activities include skating, hot pools and tubing. Weather permitting, we can walk in to view New Zealand’s highest mountain, Mt Cook/Aoraki, across swing bridges and raging rivers through spectacular scenery.

Overnight trip to Moeraki, famous for the round boulders on the beach. There are great beach walks, and  an evening visit to view the seals and rare yellow eyed penguins in their natural habitat.

Skiing and Snowboarding There are several ski fields within easy reach of Dunedin with excellent facilities. Lessons are provided for everyone. Accommodation is in cabins in a holiday park or in a lodge.

Long Tramp in Fiordland A 5 day tramp in November into the mountains in the headwaters of Lake Wakatipu. It involves a  round trip up the Caples River, a bit of a climb over McKellor Saddle, and then back down the Greenstone River.

Kayaking and Cycling at Mavora Lakes  The Mavora Lakes, near Te Anau, are surrounded by spectacular mountains.  We will camp next to the northern lake, then explore both lakes in double sea-kayaks (training is provided).  Short tramps and cycling are included in this adventure.

Bush and beach adventures in the Catlins From our base at a lodge near Tautuku Beach we enjoy bush walks, games, an overnight camp at the beach, a rather ‘muddy’ time and trips further afield to see waterfalls, sea lions and other natural wonders.

Policy Regarding the Payment of Homestay Fees for the Months of December and January

The months of December and January cover our summer school holidays. Where a student is remaining in New Zealand over this period and is in a homestay, we will require full homestay fees. A 50% refund of the period the student is away from the homestay will be given to a student only if their trip is authorised by the school and they give the school the exact dates of their trip four (4) weeks before they plan to leave Dunedin.

The school may give approval for a trip after they have been given written details about where the student intends to go, how they are travelling, and who they are travelling with. We need to know the dates of when they will be away from their homestay. Written permission must be provided from the student's family agreeing that the school cannot take responsibility for their son or daughter while they are absent from the city. This can be given by e-mail through an agent.

If dates for a trip are not given four (4) weeks before departure, a refund will not be given.

Students are expected to pay full homestay fees throughout the school year.

Email from Maja Behrmann to Miss Beck, Latin Teacher

Salve Miss Beck,

This is Maja. I was one of your Latin students from Germany last year!
I just wanted to tell you that I got the best grades in Latin this term in Germany which I have ever achieved.  I'm sure that this is because of your excellent teaching and your methods in the lessons.  I really learned to love Latin a wee bit more and so I just wanted to thank you for those great Latin lessons we all were able to spend with you! It was simply amazing and I learned a lot!  I hope you are well and having very nice students.   Also I´m supposed to greet you from my Latin teacher here in Germany, she was really impressed by us doing Vergil in New Zealand!   Lots of warm regards from Germany,  Maja

Support for Students

Logan Park is proud of its welcoming and friendly school environment.

The International Department strives to make your time at Logan Park enjoyable and rewarding.  Students are placed into a House Group for the duration of their time at Logan Park and this is a good way for international students to make friends with New Zealand students.  At Orientation we arrange for a New Zealand student from each house group to be an 'international student buddy' to help students settle-in to school in the first few weeks.   The school Guidance Counsellor is also available to international students.

Code of Practice

Logan Park High School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website.

Summary code of Practice

Introduction

When students from other countries come to study in New Zealand, it is important that those students are well informed, safe, and properly cared for. New Zealand educational providers have an important responsibility for international students' welfare. Our school is a signatory to the Ministory of Education's Code of Practice for the pastoral care of international students (the code).

What is the Code?

The Code is a document that provides a framework for service delivery by educational providers and their agents to international students. The Code sets out the minimum standards of advice and care that are expected of educational providers with respect to international students. The Code applies to pastoral care and provision of information only and not to academic standards.

Who does the Code apply to?

The Code applies to all education providers in New Zealand with international students enrolled. The Code is mandatory to these providers and must be signed by them.

What is an "international student"?

An "international student" is a foreign student studying in New Zealand.

How can I get a copy of the Code?

You can request a copy of the Code from your New Zealand education provider. The Code is also available online from www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international

How do I know if an education provider has signed the Code?

The New Zealand Ministry of Education maintains a register of all signatories to the Code. This is available online from www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international

If the education provider that you are seeking to enrol with is not a signatory to the Code, you will not be granted a permit from the New Zealand Immigration Service and you will not be able to study at that institution.

What do I do if something goes wrong?

If you have concerns about your treatment by your education provider or by an agent of the provider, the first thing you must do is contact the principal, the international student director, or another person who has been identified to you as someone that you can approach about complaints at your institution. The Code requires all institutions to have fair and equitable internal grievance procedures for students and you need to go through these internal processes before you can take the complaint any further.

If your concerns are not resolved by the internal grievance procedures, you can contact the International Education Appeal Authority (IEAA).

What is the International Education Appeal Authority (IEAA)?

The IEAA is an independent body established to deal with complaints from international students about pastoral care aspects of advice and services received from their education provider or the provider's agents. The IEAA enforces the standards in the Code of Practice.

How can I contact the IEAA?

You can write to the IEAA at:
International Education Appeal Authority
c/o Ministry of Education
Private Bag 47-911
Ponsonby
Auckland

Fax:
(09) 374 5403
Phone:
(09) 374 5481
E-mail: info.ieaa@minedu.govt.nz

What will the IEAA do?

The purpose of the IEAA is to adjudicate on complaints from international students. The IEAA will investigate complaints and determine if there has been a breach of the Code. The IEAA has the power to impose sanctions on education providers who have committed a breach of the Code that is not a serious breach. These sanctions include an order for restitution, publication of the breach, and/or requiring that remedial action be undertaken. The IEAA will refer complaints that are not about pastoral care to another regulatory body if appropriate. The education provider will be given a reasonable time to remedy the breach. If the breach is not remedied within that time, the IEAA may refer the complaint to the Review Panel. The IEAA can determine if it considers that a breach of the Code is a serious breach. If the breach is a serious breach, the IEAA will refer the complaint to the Review Panel.

What can the Review Panel do?

The Review Panel can remove or suspend an education provider as a signatory to the Code, meaning that the provider would be prevented from taking any more international students. Only the IEAA can refer complaints to the Review Panel. A summary of the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students The Code sets standards for education providers to ensure that:

  • high professional standards are maintained
  • the recruitment of international students is undertaken in an ethical and responsible manner
  • information supplied to international students is comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date
  • students are provided with information prior to entering into any commitments
  • contractual dealings with international students are conducted in an ethical and responsible manner
  • the particular needs of international students are recognised
  • international students are in safe accommodation
  • all providers have fair and equitable internal procedures for the resolution of international student grievances. Full details of what is covered can be found in the Code itself. The Code also establishes the IEAA and the Review Panel to receive and adjudicate on student complaints.

The ESOL Department helps provide both Migrant and International Students with the English language skills and qualifications required to achieve in the New Zealand education system. We provide small and friendly classes to ensure that all students have every opportunity to have their individual learning needs met. Up to 12 hours tuition in ESOL is available every week.

The course and classes offered depends on the numbers and needs of the students that year.  ESOL courses and classes are redesigned each year to best meet the needs of the current students. Students can choose to concentrate on improving their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening for NCEA credits or for external English Language Exams or both.

In 2012 the ESOL programme is divided into four levels:

1)  Foundation/Elementary Level (11ESL)

2)  Pre-intermediate to intermediate (12ESL)

3)  Advanced (13ESL)
